Breaking News: Former President Muhammadu Buhari Dies at 82

Nigeria is mourning the loss of its former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London, United Kingdom, at the age of 82.

According to a statement from the Presidency, Buhari passed away around 4:30 p.m., after suffering from a long-term illness. He had been receiving medical treatment in a London clinic before his death.

A Life of Leadership

Muhammadu Buhari was a major figure in Nigerian history. He first led the country as a military ruler in 1983, and later returned as a democratically elected president in 2015. He made history by becoming the first opposition candidate to defeat a sitting president in Nigeria.

He served two terms as President, from 2015 to 2023, and was known for his campaign against corruption and his promise to secure the country. However, his time in office also saw economic challenges, rising insecurity, and public criticism over his leadership style.

Nationwide Mourning

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced Buhari’s death and declared seven days of national mourning. Flags across the country were ordered to be flown at half-mast. The Federal Government also plans to hold a special session to honor his memory.

Buhari’s body was flown to his hometown Daura in Katsina State, where he was buried on Monday, July 14, according to Islamic rites.

Tributes From Across Nigeria

Many Nigerian leaders, including former presidents, governors, and traditional rulers, have sent their condolences. President Tinubu described him as “a man of discipline, integrity, and national service.” Vice President Shettima and former President Goodluck Jonathan also praised Buhari’s contribution to Nigeria’s democracy.

Ordinary Nigerians expressed mixed feelings, with some praising his fight against corruption, while others blamed him for hardship during his time in office.
Legacy
Buhari will be remembered as a strong, sometimes controversial leader. His supporters saw him as a man of honesty who wanted to fix Nigeria, while his critics believed he didn’t do enough to solve key problems like unemployment, insecurity, and inflation.
Despite the debate, his impact on Nigeria’s political history is undeniable.

Final Resting Place
Buhari has now been laid to rest in his hometown, surrounded by family, friends, political allies, and world dignitaries. As Nigeria reflects on his life and leadership, the nation moves forward with both grief and gratitude for his service.
